Find out how much you can spend, before you retire

Most retirement calculators assume one average return. Century Tested replays your savings and spending through every real market since 1928, including the Depression, the 1970s and 2008, and shows how often your plan would have lasted.

Then it shows you better ways to take money out: guardrails that adjust spending a little with the market, a cash bucket so you don’t sell in a crash, and our combined plan that uses both.

  • See your odds honestly. How many past retirements your plan would have survived, and the hardest ones.
  • Find your spending range. How far you could push spending with guardrails, and the lowest it would go.
  • Size your cash bucket. We recommend 3 to 5 years of spending, and show you why for your numbers.
  • Compare strategies side by side. Fixed spending, guardrails, buckets and the combined plan, on your savings.

Plus · Coming soon

A plan only helps if you follow it. Plus keeps you on track every year.

Retirement isn’t one decision. Each year, markets move, prices rise and your cash bucket runs down. Plus turns your rules into a short check-in every January, so you always know what to do next, and why.

  1. January reminder. We let you know your yearly review is due.
  2. Five-minute check-in. Enter your balances and last year’s spending.
  3. Your update. Trim, hold or give yourself a raise, under the rules you chose.
  4. Your cash plan. How much to move to your cash bucket, built up gradually if you need it.
  5. Your printable plan. Updated and ready for your advisor, any time.

Printable plan

Your plan, in writing, ready for your advisor

Retirement decisions are easier to make together. The printable plan turns your numbers into about a dozen clear pages you can follow on your own or share with a spouse or a financial professional: exact dollar triggers for each year, what to do in a crash, and a worksheet for your yearly check-in.

  • Your trigger table. For each of your first 15 years: the savings level that means cut, the level that means raise, and your cash bucket, in that year’s dollars.
  • A crash playbook. What your rules say to do if stocks fall 20%, 35% or 50% in your first year, step by step.
  • Six famous bad starts. Your plan replayed year by year from 1929, 1937, 1966, 1973, 2000 and 2007.
  • A yearly check-in worksheet. Ten minutes each January: fill in a column and the decision makes itself.
  • Advisor questions. Taxes, account order, Social Security timing and more.

Common questions

Is the free plan really free?

Yes. Enter your email address and the whole planner unlocks: every retirement since 1928, guardrails, buckets, the combined plan and the strategy comparison. The calculators on our tools pages don’t need an email at all.

When will Plus be available?

Plus is coming soon. Join the waitlist and we’ll email you when it opens. Nothing is charged to join the waitlist, and joining also unlocks the free planner.

What’s in the printable plan?

About a dozen pages built from your own numbers: your rules step by step; a trigger table with the exact savings levels that mean cut or raise for each of your first 15 years; a playbook for a 20%, 35% or 50% market drop; your plan replayed year by year through six famous bad starts; your odds and spending floor; a yearly check-in worksheet; and questions for your advisor. The cover and first page are free to preview before you buy.

Do I need Plus if I’m already retired?

You don’t need it, but it’s built for you. Live mode turns your rules into a short yearly check-in: enter a few numbers each January and it tells you whether to trim, hold or raise spending and whether to refill your cash bucket.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If the printable plan isn’t useful to you, email [email protected] within 30 days of buying it and we’ll refund you in full. Payments are handled securely by Stripe.

Is this financial advice?

No. Century Tested is an educational tool that tests plans against market history. It doesn’t consider taxes or your full situation, so we encourage you to review decisions with a fiduciary financial professional. The printable plan is designed to make that conversation easier.

Where are my numbers stored?

The planner runs in your browser, and the numbers you enter stay on your device. Your email address is used to unlock the planner and, if you choose, to send the newsletter.
